The River Medlock is a 10-mile-long watercourse in Greater Manchester. A reliable method was required to repair a scour along the riverbed while minimising environmental impact.
The primary challenge was accessing the works, which required constructing a pontoon and access platform to transport the materials to reach the dammed area. The dam then had to be drained to prepare the site for installing the Above Water and Under Water concrete bagwork and for clearing all debris from the drained water. In addition, it was essential to stabilise and protect the dam wall to enable the scour repairs.
SoluForm Above Water and Under Water concrete bagwork was selected as the most effective scour approach for the River Medlock. The prefilled concrete bagwork, with the under water bagwork with a biodegradable liner and the above water bagwork with a water soluble liner, enabled rapid installation with limited site disturbance, safeguarding both the river and the surrounding environment while achieving the project’s performance and sustainability targets. This technique consistently delivers dependable regulation of water movement and structural integrity, underpinning long term protection plans for drainage channels and embankments.
The works used SoluForm Above Water and Under Water concrete bagwork to provide durable structural support and long term protection along the River Medlock.
