What was the challenge?
Kaymac Marine & Civil Engineering was commissioned to carry out repairs that were carried out entirely in wet conditions, with no dry working window, including night shifts to remove a failed patch plate and install a newly manufactured hatch repair system. A carefully engineered approach was required throughout. Once the repairs were completed, SoluForm underwater bagwork was placed upstream and downstream to reduce the risk of debris impact during periods of high flow.
What was the solution?
SoluForm underwater concrete bagwork was selected as the most suitable solution for the project, providing a robust yet environmentally considerate method of protection around the repaired main. The pre-filled bags, comprising an inner biodegradable liner within an outer biodegradable hessian bag, were delivered to site ready for immediate use, reducing handling time and simplifying installation in challenging wet conditions. The potato starch liner ensures the product also creates a clean method of placement, to eliminate any effect upon the environment arising from the placement of concrete in the river
The bags were placed directly into the watercourse to form a stable protective apron around the exposed sections of pipe, conforming closely to the uneven riverbed profile. Once positioned, the concrete within the bags hardened to create a durable, interlocking mass that helps resist scour and displacement during periods of high flow and provide a robust scour protection moving forward. Throughout the works, the fully biodegradable bag and liner system ensured that no plastic or other persistent waste entered the river, supporting the client’s environmental commitments while maintaining the integrity of the asset.
What was the outcome for the client?
The completion of the repairs was followed by the installation of SoluForm underwater concrete bagwork, providing protection to reduce the risk of debris impact during periods of high flow.
